Energy
Sources
To
harness energy from natural resources is our most common
practice, but it is depleting our resources. We are searching
for alternative and more lasting energy sources. Fortunately
there are a variety of alternatives that have emerged, here are
a few of the more promising and available energy
sources:
Solar:
Presently solar energy is used mostly to heat furnaces in homes
and swimming pools. In future it can be used to run cars and
power plants. Miniaturization is speeding up the ways in which
this energy source can be used; the smaller the parts, the more
ways in which this power source is utilized, and it's currently
being found powering calculators, watches, mp3 music players
and radios, among other products.
Wind:
Wind power is used to generate electricity for homes. But it is
dependent on local weather conditions. In future wind power can
be used to generate electricity for national grids.

Mile Island; solar panel on a house roof; a rooftop array of
wind turbines; a vertical-axis wind turbine; underground coils
being laid for geothermal heating system.

Geothermal: This energy is obtained from
internal heat of the earth and is used to heat homes. It can be
used to generate steam to run steam turbines.
Hydroelectric: This electricity comes from
damming rivers and using the rushing energy of water to
generate electricity.
Nuclear
energy: Nuclear power is generated by using Uranium, and
presently corresponds to 11% of world’s energy needs. It
produces huge amounts of energy from small amounts of
fuel.
Fossil
fuel: Coal, oil and gas are called fossil fuels, and they
provide 66% of the world’s electrical power and 95% of total
energy demands. These are depleting fast, they are not
renewable, and the use of them contributes to much
environmental pollution.
Finding
more sustainable, cleaner alternative energy sources is our
mantra for a safe future.
